Pilates at Seneca Physical Therapy & Wellness
Seneca is very pleased to announce that we have Pilates
available. We are able to offer Pilates on the mat,
chair and a fully loaded Deluxe Reformer that has a
tower, twin mat system, long/short box and a jumpboard.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a combination of physical and mental
exercise. It is an exercise program developed by Joseph
Pilates to promote strength, flexibility, and balance
through non-impact movements.
It can be performed by any person at any level of
fitness and at any age. It is effective for Olympic
level competitive athletes as well as those with
physical limitations requiring a walker or wheel chair.
Pilates is even helpful for pregnant women with back
issues and for post-partum mothers who want to get back
in shape and tone up. The exercises are modified for
each individual.
Our Pilates sessions are one-on-one. This allows the
novice to be able to focus on learning a new skill,
while a veteran can concentrate on areas they want to
perfect.
What if I am recovering from an injury, can I still take
Pilates?
Yes!! Pilates is low impact and can easily and safely be
modified to protect the injured area. In fact,
exercising the rest of the body can speed recovery.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates is a full body workout and has multiple
benefits:
- Improves Core Strength
- Reduces the risk of injury or re-injury
- Improves body awareness – such as balance, posture,
coordination
- Improves circulation
- Improves mental and emotional outlook – helps to reduce
tension and rejuvenate the mind and body
- Speeds up recovery from pregnancy and makes pregnancy
easier
- Helps with motivation
People with the following conditions have reported that
Pilates has lessened or relieved many of their symptoms:
- Back Pain
- Chronic and acute pain of muscles and joints
- Sports injuries (including pulled or strained muscles and ligaments)
- Arthritis
- Reduced range of motion
- Circulatory problems
- Pregnancy Pre & Post Partum
Though the effects of a single session are difficult to
see, a well-spaced series of Pilates sessions can show
great improvements in the issues listed above. Exercises
are easily modified for each individual’s needs.
When Shouldn’t I try Pilates?
Some conditions exist that could be exacerbated by
Pilates:
- Recent injuries including fractures, strains, sprains,
ruptures or tears
- Pregnant (if you have never done Pilates before)
- Some cardiac problems
- Some skin conditions
- Infectious diseases
- Some neural conditions
Check with your health care professional if you have
questions as to whether Pilates would be right for you.
